Dmitry Muratov was born on 30th October 1961 in Kuibyshev (now known as Samara) and is thought to be raised in Kuibyshev itself.

He attended Kuibyshev State University, where he earned a five-year degree and later developed an interest in journalism. While being available in college, he developed his interest in local newspapers and started holding part-time jobs in the field of journalism.

After he attained his degree from the Kuybyshev State University, he was appointed as Soviet Army, the role which he served from 1983 to 1985.

He often used to mention the essence of military activities and call himself to be the expert of sorting equipment.

Dmitry’s career began in 1987 when he began working as a correspondent for the Volzhsky Komsomolets newspaper.

His superiors were so impressed with his performance that he was appointed as Head of the Komsomolskaya Pravda Youth Department by the end of the year, and he was soon promoted to the position of news article editor.

In 1988, he resigned from Komsomolskaya Pravda.

He and 50+ colleagues left Komsomolskaya Pravda in 1993 to launch their own newspaper, Novaya Gazeta.

They established a goal for their newspaper that was based on producing an honest, independent, and well-resourced newspaper that can help the country grow while the people of the society grow.

The newspaper’s mission was to conduct an in-depth investigation into human rights and related issues, corruption and related cases, and power abuse.

The Novaya Gazeta newspaper began with an office that contained two computers, two rooms, and one printer, with no expectation of profit or salary for the employees.

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev sold some of his Nobel Peace Prize money to fund employee salaries and office computers. Muratov, as Deputy Press Editor, contributed to the growth of the newspaper.

Muratov was appointed as the war zone correspondent of the First Chechen War from December 1994 to January 1995.

He was appointed as the head of the editorial board in 1995, and he continued to hold the position until 2017, when he stated that he would not run for re-election. In 2019, he was re-elected to the position and appointed to the newspaper’s editorial board.

The newspaper began publishing important events from the Chechen war, including a report by Elena Milashina and the 27 Chechen men who were killed on January 26th, 2017.

The newspaper covered a wide range of topics and reported on the Russian government and related services. Muratov resigned from his position in 2017, citing the newspaper’s exhausting nature.

He devoted more than 20 years of his life to the devotion and growth of the newspaper. Later that year, he joined the paper’s staff and was elected editor-in-chief.
