Tame’s abuser, Nicolaas Bester, was eventually caught and convicted of “maintaining a sexual connection with someone under the age of 17,” Tame argued, a crime that needed to be renamed owing to the deceptive usage of the term “relationship” for abuse in other countries.

As a result, the abuser was sentenced to jail; but, owing to Tasmania’s gag laws, Grace was unable to publicly report the event.

Furthermore, the law prohibited Tame and other survivors from publicly speaking out about their ordeals, even while Tame’s abuser brags about his offenses on social media.

As a result of Tame’s lawsuit, Nina Funnell, a journalist and sexual assault victim advocate joined forces with Tame to launch #LetHerSpeak, a campaign alongside Marque Lawyers and End Rape on Campus Australia to overturn this and similar legislation in the Northern Territory.

Nonetheless, Tame came out for the first time in August 2019 when the campaign obtained a court order on her behalf from Tasmania’s Supreme Court, freeing her from the hush limitation.

She was also the first female sexual assault victim in Tasmania to receive a court order permitting her to talk about her tragedy.

Similarly, in response to Grace Tame’s #LetHerSpeak campaign, Tasmania’s Attorney-General Elise Archer said in October 2019 that policy will be altered to enable sexual assault survivors to publicly speak out.

The crime’s terminology would also be amended, according to Archer, since “the word connection carries overtones of consent.”

The legislation was eventually modified in April 2020 to enable Tasmanian survivors to openly express themselves.

He was also re-arrested for the creation of child exploitation material after revealing how he sexually assaulted Tame online.

Grace also pushed for the removal of an antiquated statute that allowed her assailant to speak in public while preventing her from telling her tale under her own name.

As a consequence, the legislation was altered, resulting in a better understanding of the problem and giving future victims of abuse courage and hope.
