Joel was of Jewish, Russian, and Polish descent; he immigrated to the United States as a child, and his children grew up in a bi-racial household.

Joel’s children starred in the ABC sitcom “On Our Own” in the 1990s. Smollett died on January 7, 2015, following a protracted fight with cancer.

Smollett, Jussie Smollett made his acting debut in 1991 in “A Little Piece of Heaven,” and then starred as Terry Hall in “The Mighty Ducks,” a film about a Minnesota lawyer who is required to coach a hockey kids group as part of his community service.
Jussie made voice recordings for “Cro” in 1993, and stayed with the project for a year. In 1994, he was cast as Jesse Jerrico in the television series “On Our Own,” alongside his brothers.
Jussie appeared in two episodes of “The Skinny” and “The Mindy Project” in 2012, the latter as a guest star. After that, he had minor roles in films like “Ask Me Anything” and “Mariah Carey: Infinity.”
In 2015, he made his big break when he was cast as Jamal Lyon in the highly praised TV series “Empire,” which follows a man who must pick between his three kids who will inherit his financial empire.
Ricks was played by the actor in the 2017 film “Alien: Covenant.” Jussie has had a total of 21 acting roles, as well as co-writing two songs for the “Empire” soundtrack.
