With the radical political street theatre San Francisco Mime Troupe, Coyote began acting, directing, and composing plays.
From 1967 through 1975, he was a member of the San Francisco counterculture. During this time, he co-founded the Diggers, an anarchist organization, and began arranging theatrical events for them.
In the early 1970s, he worked with the San Francisco Arts Commission’s historic Neighborhood Arts Program (NAP).
He became a member of the California Arts Council in 1975 and stayed until 1983.
He returned to the stage in 1978, with performances at the Magic Theatre.
‘Die Laughing,’ a 1980 comedy-drama, launched his film career.
Soon after, he landed his first leading role in William Dear’s action thriller ‘Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann.’
He made his film debut in the 1985 courtroom drama thriller ‘Jagged Edge.’
Coyote received his first Emmy nomination in 1990 for a cameo appearance on the TV drama ‘Road to Avonlea.’
