Shomu Mukherjee was an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer. Shomu Mukherjee followed in the footsteps of his father, uncles, and older brothers in pursuing a career in the film industry.

Shomu Mukherjee was born on June 19, 1943, in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India, to Sashadhar Mukherjee and Sati Devi.

His father was a well-known Hindi film producer who founded Filmistan Studio before going on to found Filmalaya.

He was his parents’ fourth child, with three older brothers: director and composer Late Rono Mukherjee, as well as actors Late Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee; one younger sister Shibani, and one younger brother Subir.

His niece is Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji, and his nephew is director Ayan Mukerji.

Shomu Mukherjee met actress Tanuja, the daughter of actress Shobana and filmmaker Kumarsen of the Samarth family, on the sets of his first film, ‘Ek Baar Muskura Do,’ which he produced in 1972.

They married the following year. In his later films, his wife played both leading and supporting roles.

His two daughters from his marriage to Tanuja are actors Kajol and Tanisha. Kajol’s husband is actor Ajay Devgan.

Shomu and his wife’s marriage lasted only a few years. Despite their agreement to disagree, they raised their two daughters together. Despite the fact that they lived apart, they paid monthly visits to their daughters at their boarding schools.

Following his divorce from his wife, he continued to live with his family in Grotto Villa, while Tanuja relocated to the Usha Kiran apartment with her daughters.

He had been ill for a long time in the 2000s. His daughter Kajol is said to have stayed away from her family to care for him, monitoring his meals and medication.

On April 10, 2008, he died of a major heart attack in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Mukherjee made his Bollywood debut in 1972, producing the Bollywood drama film ‘Ek Baar Muskura Do,’ directed by his cousin Ram Mukherjee and starring his two brothers Joy and Deb Mukherjee, as well as Tanuja, his future wife, and Shobana Samarth, his future mother-in-law.

The soundtrack by O.P. Nayyar was a highlight of the film’s commercial success. Tanuja was cast as the lead actress in his second film, ‘Nannha Shikari,’ which he also wrote and directed.

He later collaborated with Rajesh Khanna on his next two films, ‘Chhailla Babu’ (1977) and ‘Fiffty Fiffty’ (1981), both directed by Khanna. Chhailla Babu was a huge hit, grossing more than Rs.4 crores.

He then produced and directed two films, ‘Lover Boy’ (1985) and ‘Pathar Ke Insan’ (1986). Both films were box office failures, and Mukherjee never produced or directed another film after ‘Pathar Ke Insan.’
