After leaving the Suns, he joined the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and began his career.

He began his career with the New Jersey Nets in 2000 but was released in 2001.

He joined the San Antonio Spurs in 2001 and quickly became a crucial component, appearing in 80 games. 

In 2003, Stephen became a free agent and signed a two-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks.
