In June 2021, Schoenmaker qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Schoenmaker got the top seed for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, in the 200-meter breaststroke.
In the 100m breaststroke, she was seeded fourth. Schoenmaker swam a 1:04.82 in the prelims of the 100-meter breaststroke, beating American Lilly King’s previous Olympic and African records set in 2016.
Schoenmaker swam 1:05.07 in the semifinals to qualify for the final. Schoenmaker finished in second place in the final, earning her first Olympic medal since 2000.
On day five of the competition, Schoenmaker swam a 2:19.16 in the prelim heats of the 200-meter breaststroke, breaking the Olympic record and qualifying first overall for the semifinals.
Tatjana qualified first for the final with a time of 2:19.33 in the semifinals. Schoenmaker won the gold medal in the 200m breaststroke after breaking a new world record (2:18.95).
