Viola Davis was born to her grandparents on August 11, 1965, in St. Matthews, South Carolina. Her father, Dan Davis, was a horse trainer. Mary Alice, her mother, was a factory worker and a maid.

Mary was also a civil rights activist. Viola is the second youngest of her parents six children. Two months after Davis was born, the family relocated to Rhode Island.

The earnings of her parents were insufficient to keep the family afloat. They lived in filthy, rat-infested apartments and had to deal with food shortages on a regular basis.

Davis was imprisoned alongside her mother when she was two years old, after the latter was arrested during a protest. She attended ‘Central Falls High School,’ where she discovered her interest in acting.

She continued her education at ‘Rhode Island College,’ where she majored in theatre and graduated in 1988. After graduation, she attended the prestigious ‘Juilliard School‘ in New York City.

She appeared briefly in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Out of Sight’ in 1998.

In the 2001 play ‘King Hedley II,’ she portrayed a woman fighting for the right to abort her pregnancy. Davis won the Tony Award for her performance in this Broadway production.
