Cece Telfer’s Professional Career
Cece began her track and field career as a high school male athlete, competing in the 400 meters, hurdles, and other events. She maintained a solid high school record, which she carried into college.
Cece enrolled at Franklin Pierce University and competed in the NCAA Division II 400M event, finishing 200th in 2016 and 390th the following year in 2017. She took a break from work to complete her transformation.
To qualify as a trans-woman athlete, she came out as a trans-woman in 2019 and underwent testosterone suppression for a year, as required by NCAA standards.
She raced in the 60m hurdles and 200m dash races in the Women’s division after qualifying for NCAA Division II track and field. She finished third and seventh, respectively.
In the same year, she finished first in the 400m hurdles finals. Cece was interviewed by multiple media outlets and sports news stations after becoming the first trans woman to ever win an NCAA championship in 2019. She won first place in the 400m hurdle and 100m hurdle at the New England outdoor championships the same year.
At the Northeast-1 outdoor track and field tournament, she also placed first in the 400m hurdles event. Later in 2020-21, she competed in selection trials for the 2020 Olympics 400m hurdles event, where she was screened in the first round but was unable to advance further in the US trials due to her failure to meet the testosterone threshold for trans athletes.
