“Life Below Zero,” produced by the BBC and broadcast on the National Geographic Channel, is a documentary series that follows the lives of six Alaskan families as they struggle to survive in a harsh environment.

The majority of them are hunters and subsistence ‘farmers,’ relying solely on themselves and their resources.

Glenn Villeneuve, a Burlington native who moved to the north in 1999 and now lives alone in Chandalar, and Jessie Holmer, a hunter and fisherman, are also featured in “Life Below Zero.”

The series received a few nominations and awards after capturing the attention of the media, most notably the 68th, 69th, and 70th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Sue Aikens, a fan favorite, left Kavik River Camp, leaving fans sad and disappointed. Sue has stated numerous times how much she enjoys Alaska,

but as she puts it, she is getting older and has less capacity to do some chores.

However, she stated that she craves time away from societal rules she doesn’t understand, which is why Alaska was the right match for her at the time.
“In my world, I get snacks and naps, and I get to run around and play, so I like my world,” she concluded.
