Niklas Hjalmarsson began his career with Eksjo HC in the SWE.5 division in 2001. He participated in several leagues from 2003 to 2007, including J20, SWE U18, and SEL. HV71 is the name of the team for which he played.

He was also spotted in Allsv in 2006, where he played for IK Oskarshamn. He was a member of the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League in 2007. In the same year, he appeared in 13 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks.

He was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL from 2008 to 2017. In 610 games, he scored 23 goals, 119 assists, and 142 points for a total of 142 points.
